Joel,
I know that I've told you before, but I just wanted to once again let you know how much RockinghamMemories has meant to me. It is absolutely one of my most favorite sites on the internet.
Also, know that your site has become a home for us all. Here we can come at anytime, open the front door, step inside and once again be welcomed to recalling precious memories that we all still retain in our minds of our old hometown, and all we had to do was key in www.rockinghammemories.net.
Finally, thanks for being the person that encouraged me to sit down and share my memories. Writing was not one of my fortes, but your requesting that I share with others my old memories actually made it fun for me.
One word is not sufficient, but "THANKS!" is all I can come up with.
God Bless to you and Sandra.

Joel, I was doing a Google search on something entirely unrelated and found a reference to this website. How very cool ! You've done an excellent job here. I haven't taken the time to look at all of the good stuff yet; just had to send this note first. The "RTI" days were a truly special time. What a great bunch of kids and teachers and so very much fun. Wonderful memories. Thanks so much for your efforts and for giving me the smiles of those youthful times.

Quick note on #16. Because of Goodyear store, I think John Hartgrove is correct and that photo was taken from near Kay's. Manufacturers Building was there. WAYN broadcast from there for many years. It was from that window that I would sit with Jim Smith and Henry Boggan in the 50's and watch the Christmas parades. Could always see Rudolph on top of Hallum's...Gaddy's also.

Stumbled upon your site as a link on a UNC basketball site. My father's family is from Rockingham and I spent many summers there growing up. When searching you site I noticed that you are a Bailey as well. Not familiar with your name, but we may be related somehow. Bailey Rd in Rockingham is where all my family lived and some still do. Gene was my dad, Eugene my grandfather. Any feedback would be appreciated. I really miss Rockingham and most of the Baileys close to me have passed so would be nice to hear from someone there.
Chuck - the set of Baileys you refer to lived on County Home Road in Rockingham - a different set from my family. Joel Bailey

R-40, notice all the cotton on top of the building's roof, it's a wonder it's a wonder it didn't burst into flames from internal combustion. I watched this happen one time at the Carolina Paper Mill.We were on strike for a 5 cent raise, we were out front of the ware-house that was stacked with big rolls of uncut tissue paper couverd with dust. Hector Cafferta, the General Manager was there trying to get us to go back to work. we were cooking a Catfish stew in a big cast iron wash pot, when the flames just eurupted, every body started running to put it out, and I said, give us the raise or let the Damn Place burn down, they put it out, and I walked away, never to return, best decision, I ever made. Thanks John D.

R-30 was located right below the Court-House, on the right going south. The white building was a Garage or Machine shop. The brick building was a Car Parts Store. I would go in them on my Paper Route everyday. I can't remember the names of them, I want to say the Parts store was called Smith Auto Parts.

From John DuBose 02-10-11.
R-8, is the bridge between Pee Dee #1 & Pee Dee #2, I used to get on the Railing & Walk across it every time, I walked to School, also caught many fish under it. It was the runoff from Davis Lake, about 100ft. to the right of it was a small store, I think it was called Capels Grocery, there was a small house on each side of the store. The one closest to the bridge, was lived in by a family named "Hardy", on the other side of the store, a family named "Goodell", lived there, the Mother was named Corrina, the Son's name was Jimmie and the Daughter was named Verli Jane. To the right of thier house was Davis Lake Rd. Johnnie Gillis's Mattress Shop was across the rd. from thier house. This was about 1952.When you went into the front door of the Store. there was a Coke Machine, the Cokes were held by thier necks, by flat bars of Galv. metal. to get one, you put in a nickel, slid the Coke to the end and lifted straight up. One other thing, across the street from the Pointiac Place, was a theatre called "The Little Theatre", we also had one called "The Richmond Theatre", it was located on Main St.near Claude Maske Furn. Store.

Joel, starting with the frist pic. with me on Lawn-mower.In the trailer, Mackenzie, Ashlee and Jackie DuBose, if you notice the tag on the front of the Mower, is a S.C. with the Letters JMD on it, my initials, and I was Born in McColl, S.C. Found it in a Flea Market, what are the odds? The Man standing by the sign & on the 46 John Deers tractor, is Charlie Bonnett 111, Guitarist & singer For the band "Kinfoke" he's from Dickson, Tn. R-40 was a Cotton Gin in 5 points. R-37 was going into 5 Points after leaving "HoneyTown". R-11 was the Cotton Gin in 5 Points, it would blow perfeck smoke rings out of the Smoke-stack. The noise it made sounded like a Two Cylinder John Deere Tractor, also known as a "Johnny Popper. Thanks, John D.

I just love all the stories and photos on my husband's website like Bob McDonald's Page of Memories, Bill Dennis' Town Crier, etc.
Approximately 1500 people view his website Rockingham Memories daily.
I can hardly read now but try to print off some of the stories to view.
I graduated from Rockingham High in 1967 but do not see much from my classmates. If anyone would like to contact me, please do.
I think my husband does a fantastic job of keeping these two websites up and know he would appreciate more input from viewers.
I am on disability with a disease called PSP(progressive supranuclear palsy). Please keep me in your prayers.

Hometown? Trick question. Rockingham is and will always be my hometown even though i have lived in Hope Mills, NC even though I have lived in Hope Mills 34 of the last 35 years.
Love you bringing back personal true life stories and posting on your web page. I just reread "Crossing the Pee Dee River." What an amazing story and feat! What is so amazing is that all 5 of you did not fall in. I am sure 1 of you used that line out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-"You can't swim? Don't worry the fall will kill you first!" Were you the youngest? When did Mike graduate from high school. I just can't place him.
The next time I cross over into 74 via the R.W. Goodman Bridge I am going to stop and inspect the under sides of both bridges and hope I don't fall in.
You and Sandra are in my daily prayers. Give her my best from a baby-boomer Rocket.

I can remember one night we were there John won the race and our dad Burrhead Nantz finished second driving a 55 chevy # 64, normally driven by dad's friend Tiny Lund. My memory is Sears won this race with the left front wheel off the car. Tiny kidded dad about not being able to catch him. Dad told him his old car wasn’t fast enough. The next week dad outran Tiny and the kidding really started when dad told him 'told ya the car wasn’t fast enough.'

Thanks for your time
