1958 - School
"School daze, school daze, good ole Golden Rule Days, reading, writing and arithmetic, teacher hit me with a hickory stick"...... How many remember this little tune when you were growing up? I might not have the lyrics exactly right but I bet many of you can remember it.

I recently ran across a book from the Fifth Grade at L.J. Bell Grammar school in Rockingham entitled "My School "Daze".  Our infamous grammar school is still there and has not changed it's appearance very much - on the outside anyway.  I can still remember running around on that playground when I was a kid - playing marbles, softball or basketball. If anyone reads this page that graduated from Rockingham High in the mid 60s, you might remember this book. It is amazing that after so many years my handwriting is worse than it was in the Fifth Grade!

I have gone through this little book and made copies of pages  that I made entries in. If you have your own School Daze  book, let me know and if you want, send me your pages and I will enter them on this website also.

My old address on Old Ellerbe Rd at that time. Remember the phone numbers then - TW5 or Twining 5 - 2019?

My brother Randy was VP - best friend Marcus Comer Secy. Boy's Club was at our church.

Jenny Sue Jenkins, childhood girlfriend, William Lee Norwood, Lara Jane McDonald and Benji Alexander, good friends from school.

Benji again, Frank Hawkins, Marcus Comer, Mike Jacobs, Charles Hall and William Norwood again. Don't know why I put Marcus across from Slick Chick?

I believe the initials ids were as follows: C.T was Carol Traylor, R.B was my brother Randy, he and Carol were boy and girlfriend at the time. Then, me, J.B and J. S., which was Jenny Sue Jenkins - I must have forgot and just put her initials for her first name, then J.D. I am not sure of but J.Y. Is Judy Yates. M.C. Is Marcus Comer,  the M.P. Is Myra Pittman (I believe)  and not sure about R.M and M.S.

Self-explanatory.

Look at these lame jokes!

I remember all of these names from years ago - you might know some of them also.

Linda Smith, Vicky Jo Johnson and Jenny Sue Jenkins. That's me on the bottom right and the guy on the left I believe was Tab Hunter, thanks to Ken Smith.

If you want the lyrics to the School Day song by Chuck Berry, here they are....thanks to Ken Smith.

School Day
by Chuck Berry

Up in the mornin' and out to school
The teacher is teachin' the golden rule
American history and practical math
You studyin' hard and hopin' to pass
Workin' your fingers right down to the bone
And the guy behind you won't leave you alone

Ring, ring goes the bell
The cook in the lunch room's ready to sell
You're lucky if you can find a seat
You're fortunate if you have time to eat
Back in the classroom, open your books
Keep up the teacher don't know how mean she looks

Soon as three o'clock rolls around
You finally lay your burden down
Close up your books, get out of your seat
Down the halls and into the street
Up to the corner and 'round the bend
Right to the juke joint, you go in

Drop the coin right into the slot
You're gotta hear somethin' that's really hot
With the one you love, you're makin' romance
All day long you been wantin' to dance,
Feeling the music from head to toe
Round and round and round we go

Hail, hail rock and roll
Deliver me from the days of old
Long live rock and roll
The beat of the drums, loud and bold
Rock, rock, rock and roll
The feelin' is there, body and soul.
